Credibility of "Climate Crisis" Alarmists
What do we know about global climate changes? What's known, and has been known for 80 years, is the major change in Earth's global temperature that happens every 100,000 years. It was predicted in the 1930's by a Serb mathematician, Milutin Milankovitch. It's the cycle of warming and cooling over thousands of years, caused by slow changes in the Earth's orbit around the Sun - as calculated by Milankovitch. Any reasonable encyclopedia, whether on-line or printed, includes an explanation of the Milankovitch Cycle, which includes both warming and cooling. (Watch out for Wikipedia, which has an editor who is a "global warming" believer - he tries to claim CO2 is really responsible). The following figure illustrates the Milankovitch temperature cycle (blue) and the changing CO2 content that - as Al Gore says - is "highly correlated" with it.

Never heard of the Milankovitch Cycle before? Well, if you saw Mr. Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth , you saw Mr. Gore standing in front of a large-scale projection of atmospheric temperature and CO2, as measured in ice cores from Antarctica, as you see here. You also heard Mr. Gore claim that carbon dioxide (CO2) causes those temperature changes. Mr. Gore was careful not to mention the 80-year old Milankovitch prediction, a deliberate lie by omission. What did he leave out?
As Mr. Gore didn't tell you, and as you can see on the chart, temperature changes happen before the changes in CO2, by an average of 800 years. The Milankovitch Cycle is caused by astronomy, not by CO2, which was not part of Milankovitch's calculations. That Milankovitch could predict the temperature changes we see in the ice cores - 50 years before we had the ice cores - demonstrates their independence of carbon dioxide. Mr. Gore doesn't mention that.
Then why does carbon dioxide "correlate" (as Mr. Gore says) so well with temperature? Because the oceans are a major repository of (dissolved) carbon dioxide. When the oceans warm, they release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, like a glass of soda warming on the kitchen table, and losing its carbonation. But that's 800 years after the warming begins. CO2 changes result from temperature changes. Mr. Gore doesn't mention that either. Notice some of the places where CO2 remains constant - e.g., 125,000 years ago - while temperature drops rapidly. If CO2 causes warming, how could that happen?
The amount of water vapor (H2O) the air can hold increases exponentially with temperature. When the Milankovitch Warming begins, the warming air begins to absorb water vapor from the ocean surface. Water vapor - like CO2 - is a greenhouse gas, which slows the escape of emitted infrared energy from the earth. This energy-trapping water vapor in the air increases quickly with increasing air temperature; it's energy-trapping capability increases the temperature even more, leading to more water vapor, leading to higher temperature......In other words, H2O provides a positive feedback to the Milankovitch Warming. Since atmospheric carbon dioxide content depends on water temperature, not air temperature, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases very slowly, as the oceans warm. But according to Mr. Gore, it's all caused by CO2. Another lie.
Millions of people have seen Mr. Gore's movie, "An Inconvenient Truth." Millions of people think Mr. Gore has "proved" that CO2 causes global warming, and that current human production of CO2 is the cause of man-made global warming. Millions of people have been lied to by Mr. Gore, in a movie he has never dared to defend in a public debate against anyone. He doesn't even permit questions at his high-paid speeches or Congressional appearances. Mr. Gore, during his university education (BS in political science) took two science courses; he got a "D" in both. Since leaving national politics, he has become a multi-millionaire selling "carbon credits." Now he's brown-nosing President Obama, asking for "stimulus" investment in the "green technologies" he has invested in. Mr. Gore lives an extravagant lifestyle, consuming more electrical energy in a month than an average American family does in a year. Think Mr. Gore believes this story he peddles? Think Mr. Gore will sue me for telling you he's a liar and hypocrite ? No, he'd have to appear in court and answer questions. The credibility of this man - who has no scientific credentials - is another reason to be skeptical of "man-made global warming" and everyone who claims to believe him.
In addition to Mr. Gore's own credibility, how about his claim that "the science is all settled"? That there is a "consensus of all climate scientists" about the "warming crisis"? His ad hominem claim that the only people who disagree are ignorant hacks, in the pay of Exxon Mobil or some coal company. More than 100 climatologists, from around the world, recently signed and published an open letter to President Obama.
The scientists who continue to defend Mr. Gore's alarmist claims are the ones employed by the $6 billion the US Climate Change Research Program spends every year on this nonsense. Many of them, of course, live and work in Boulder - home of our senior Senator, Mr. Udall.
Here's the latest fiasco from the AGW simpletons: On Monday, March 2, 2009, a massive demonstration by 12,000 alarmists - the largest EVER on behalf of saving the planet from AGW - was scheduled to take place at the US Capital. Small problem: a major snow storm began Sunday afternoon; by the time of the demonstration, 8 inches of snow had piled up, temperature was in the mid-twenties, and the wind was out of the NW at 15 gusting to 25. Not quite a blizzard (officially), but a major Winter storm.
Whether or not you believe God has a sense of humor, it's obvious the AGW alarmists - led by James Hansen, Director of Goddard Institute for Space Studies (NASA), a Federal executive leading a civil disobedience demonstration - have no sense at all. The storm was forecast by Thursday of the previous week; by Saturday it was solidly in the forecast. Heavy snow was already falling in Alabama and Georgia. No attempt was made to call off or delay the demonstration. 500 of them showed up, not including Nancy Pelosi or Rep. Edward Markey, Chair of the House Committee on Energy and Global Warming. (They were delayed by the weather.) Lisa Jackson, EPA Administrator, and our own Ken Salazar , showed up at the Convention Center to harrange the crowd on Sunday night.
How credible are Hansen, Jackson, Ken Salazar, and the rest of the AGW fanatics to claim they can forecast the climate a century in advance, but are too stupid to check a weather forecast 3 days ahead? And why are members of the Obama Administration participating in a demonstration of Civil Disobedience?
